Getaway Sunglasses Case

I made this fabric-covered sunglasses case for summer getaways, pairing a playful print with a coral lining, embroidered details, and a hidden magnetic closure.

Designing the Getaway Sunglasses Case

I designed an envelope-style sunglasses case with a hidden magnetic closure to keep the flap secure without interrupting its clean shape.

I chose Bubbles for the exterior and Coral Sunset as the coordinating solid. The contrast carries through to the lining, where embroidered bubbles echo the exterior print.

Cut

With the fabrics selected, I cut the chipboard, cardstock, fabric, and fusible interfacing pieces for the sunglasses case. Keeping each group organized and labeled makes the hinged assembly easier to build in the next steps.

Embroidery

I echoed the exterior Bubbles print in the lining embroidery, creating a connection between the outside and inside and a small surprise when the case is opened.

Building the Hinged Sunglasses Case

The case uses French cartonnage, with fabric glued around rigid chipboard panels and flexible fabric hinges allowing the structure to fold.

The structure of the sunglasses case is built from hinged chipboard panels, allowing the case to fold into shape while still opening smoothly. The hinge gaps are what give the rigid panels their movement and create the finished three-dimensional form.

Covering the Hinges and Adding the Sides

With the main structure built, I covered the hinges and added the triangular side panels. The hinge fabric finishes the moving joints, while the triangular side panels connect the front and back of the case and create its final shape.

Assemble

With the exterior complete, I installed the prepared lining pieces and brought the case into its finished form. The embroidered pink lining adds a bright contrast inside, while careful alignment keeps the hinged case neat as it opens and closes.
